I came across a post on Art21, an organization now affiliated with PBS, titled The Walker Curates the News: 02.09.15 that shares what we at adroyt consider two important artistic mentions: Ben Davis’s visit to the Guggenheim’s On Kawara—Silence, which he wrote for artnet (the show is up through May 3, 2015); and Ai Weiwei directing a segment of the film Berlin, I Love You via Skype, an effort that was just completed (it took place from February 7 through 9 and appeared live as part of the Berlin International Film Festival. Berlin, I Love You is a sequel to the Cities of Love series, where 10 internationally acclaimed directors tell stories about a chosen city and about love—two of my favorite films are in this series: Paris, je t’aime made in 2006 and New York, I Love You made in 2009. I have yet to see Rio, Eu Te Amo, which was made last year but it’s now on my list. Weiwei is known the world over as an advocate for social reform in China, a stance that has made him a major figure in the fight for social justice.
Young Architects + Designers Prize Call for Entries Ends February 17
The call for entries for the Architectural League of New York’s Prize for Young Architects + Designers ends this coming Tuesday, February 17th, so if you’re entering, you’d best get on it STAT! Authenticity is the theme this year, an excellent thesis for our times. This progressive organization is on par with the Institute for Urban Design and the New York Center for Architecture as far as I’m concerned.
Ian Frazier will speak at SVA about what Wile E. Coyote can teach writers.
Ian Frazier Lectures at SVA on February 24
After grabbing a drink at W Hotels’s Living Room, I’m going to hear Ian Frazier lecture about his 42-year career as a writer. The SVA is hosting the New Yorker staff writer for his talk “The End of Writing, and What to Do After.” I heard him read at the National Arts Club when his book on Siberia debuted and I enjoyed hearing him speak very much. This should choose to be quite the interesting presentation, as Frazier will present his ideas as to how Wile E. Coyote, in his protracted and fraught relationship with Acme Company, can provide instructive lessons for aspiring product design critics—that’s some serious literary advice. Afterwards, I’ll make my way to Barbuto to try Tyler Florence’s favorite roasted chicken. I met the chef when he was tapped as the designer for House Beautiful magazine’s Kitchen of the Year (KOTY) a few years back and I was glad to see he’s made a name for himself on the Food Network as one of America’s Best Cooks.
Architectural Digest Home Design Show March 19 through 22

The Architectural Digest Home Design Show takes over Piers 92 and 94 come March 19, the annual event always attracts the design-obsessed. We covered the #ADShow2012 and I’ll be back there this year seeing what’s in store. We’ll also be on the lookout for new showroom openings during that week and will report back to you here. I’m wondering if there will finally be some 3D Printing to be seen since the magazine is covering it so progressively, as it did in this post on Dirk Vander Kooij, whom I featured on Productrazzi recently. A past favorite sighting at the show was Marcel Wanders, who is tremendously personable IRL. I’ll be catching up with manufacturers like Miele, Janus et Cie and Kartell.
ASJA Conference April 30 through May 2
Speaking of successful writers, the American Society of Journalists and Authors will hold their annual conference in New York City beginning on April 30. Dubbed “Connect for Success,” the 2015 conference includes more than 50 informative sessions; one-on-one meetings with editors, agents and publishers; three pitch slams (think poetry slam, but with article pitches instead of poetry — and immediate feedback from interested editors); formal and informal networking opportunities; personal mentoring; hands-on learning and a keynote speech by New York Times contributor and bestselling author Jennifer Finney Boylan.
Richard Estes: Painting New York City from March 10
On March 10, the exhibition Richard Estes: Painting New York City will open at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD). It will be the first exhibition Richard Estes’s art to focus on his technique and process through an examination of his New York City paintings, prints, and photographs. Spanning from the mid-1960s to the present and featuring over forty paintings and works on paper, the exhibition is Estes’ first New York City museum survey and the first solo painting show in the history of the Museum of Arts and Design.

Carsten Nicolai, one of the only contemporary artists working simultaneously in visual and sonic media, has an installation on view at Pace Gallery (with a variety of locations around NYC). Titled pionier I, 2011, the site-specific piece features a parachute, wind machine, and soundproof paneling. Devoting his focus to experimental sound, the artist has an usual take on combining the aural and the visual.

The 46th Anniversary of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Bed-In
This is a bit of a tease here but I’m wondering if we’ll be seeing a celebration of the infamous Bed-In at Strawberry Fields on August 19th, as happened on the 40th anniversary in 2009. I’ll update this post if I learn of any events surrounding the peaceful protest, which NRP covered in this thoughtful post. I came across this amazing list of commencement speeches on NPR, which includes one by Yoko Ono. Others—some surprising and some not—include Steve Jobs (Stanford University), Amy Poehler, Bill Gates, David Byrne, JK Rowling, David Foster Wallace and Tom Brokaw. Who’s on the list of speakers we’d like to see (I’m even adding a few that would be impossible to see given they are no longer alive but I couldn’t resist)? Any of the Beat Poets, especially Jack Kerouac and e.e. cummings; Buckminster Fuller, Chris Brogan, Damon Knight, Dorothea Brande, Edward Durell Stone, Eddie Izzard, Eero Saarinen, Emily Post, Ettore Sottsass, Gertrude Stein, James Taylor, John Thackara, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Joe Colombo, Le Corbusier, Rafael De Cardenas, Ray Eames, Richard Branson, Ron Arad, any of the Rolling Stones or the Cranberries, Nora Ephron, Pam Jaccarino, Kate Winslet, Diane von Furstenburg, Bob Dylan, iri5, Jodie Foster, and Tony Hsieh.
Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation Innovator’s Gala on September 30
Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation Innovator’s Gala will be held on September 30th at The Rainbow Room. Past award winners have included Norman Foster, the Frank Lloyd Write foundation in tandem with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 2013; Diller Scofidio + Renfro (designers of the High Line in New York City) and Michael Bruno, who founded 1stdibs, in 2012. This hotbed for innovation always celebrates the avant-garde in the design and architecture disciplines and this year will likely be no different. We’ll be watching for sure.
